About the artist

Namgwon Lyu makes functional and non-functional objects using a traditional technique called jitaechilgi, which is a process of applying lacquer onto paper. He manipulates brush strokes, humidity levels, and temperature within the drying process to create one-of-a-kind works that vary in shades and textures. Though he works with traditions of the present, Lyu often imagines the traditions of the future. Currently, Lyu splits his time between Seoul and Namwon, where he continues to master the Korean craft of ottchil.
