1951년, 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)은 <코리아-전쟁의 충격>이라는 제목의 사진전을 개최하였다. 이 전시에는 라이프지와 같은 잘 알려진 잡지사들과 AP통신을 비롯한 통신사는 물론이고 육해공군 그리고 해병대에 고용된 25인의 미국 사진가들이 촬영한 사진 100여 장이 전시되었다. 사진작가이자 당시 MoMA의 사진분야 책임자였던 에드워드 스타이켄이 기획했던 이 전시는 한국 사람들과 당시 벌어지고 있었던 한국전쟁(1950-1953년)의 모습을 보여주는 미국 최초의 전시였다. 물론 이 사진전은 미군들의 활약상을 보여주기 위한 것이었지만, 한국 사람들이 겪고 있던 고난 역시 함께 담겨질 수밖에 없었다. 스타이켄은 이 전시에 대해 다음과 같이 언급을 남겼다.
 
이곳에는 인간의 고귀함과 이타적인 헌신, 끊임없는 인내, 그리고 무분별함과 잔학함이 전쟁의 충격 속에 서로 한데 뒤엉켜 있다.
 
그러나 이 말은 전쟁에 참전한 군인들을 위한 것이었고, 한국 사람들을 위한 것은 아니었다. 어쩔 수 없게도 한국인들은 전쟁으로 고통 받는 피해자로 묘사될 수밖에 없었다.
 
1953년, 미국이 참전했던 이 전쟁은 휴전과 함께 종료되었고, 한국은 서서히 움직이기 시작했다. 전쟁이 끝난 지 얼마 지나지 않은 1957년, 워싱턴 D.C.의 국립미술관을 비롯해 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 보스턴 미술관, 시애틀 미술관, 미네아폴리스 미술관, 샌프란시스코 리전오브아너 미술관, LA카운티 미술관, 호놀룰라 미술관 등 미국 전역의 8개 주요 미술관에 한국의 명품 문화재들이 순회 전시되었다. 이러한 활동은 전쟁기간 중 도움을 준 미국에 대해 감사를 표시하기 위한 것이기도 했지만, 동시에 한국에 대한 미국인들의 시각을 바로잡는 데 있어 매우 효과적인 방법이기도 하였다. <한국 국보전>이라는 제목으로 개최된 이 전시는 미국 땅에서 처음으로 한국의 문화재들을 공개한 전시회였다.
 
사진작가 한영수가 Illf나 M3, M2와 같은 라이카 카메라들을 가지고 자신이 본 것을 기록하고 있었던 것 역시 같은 시기였다. 이러한 고가의 카메라 여러 대를 가지고 다녔다는 사실만으로도 그가 당시의 기준으로 극상위의 부유층 출신이라는 것은 쉽게 알 수 있는 일이었다. 다른 누군가처럼, 그 역시 이러한 부를 어떻게 사용할 것인가에 대한 선택을 해야 했다. 그리고 한영수는 그의 눈과 마음이 시키는 대로 한국 사람들을 기록해나가기 시작했다.

In 1951, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City held a photography exhibition titled Korea – The Impact of War. More than 100 photographs were taken by 25 Americans employed at established institutions and well-known magazines like Life magazine and The Associated Press as well as the Army, Navy, Air Corps, and the Marines. Organized by photographer Edward Steichen (then director of Photography at MoMA), this was the first show ever in America to feature images of Koreans and the ongoing Korean War(1950-1953). The exhibition was intended to show the challenges of the American soldiers, but could not escape showing the difficulties of the Korean people. Mr.Steichen shared his comments of the show:
 
Here human nobility, selfless devotion, inexhaustible endurance, senselessness and brutality are scrambled together in the impact of war.
 
But, this statement refers to the soldiers, not to the Korean citizens. Inevitably, the Koreans are portrayed as war-torn victims.
 
After being assisted by the U.S., the war ended in an armistice in 1953 and South Korea emerged. Shortly after, the South Korean government arranged, in 1957, for their premier artworks to travel to 8 major museums across the U.S. – the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), Seattle Art Museum (Seattle, WA), The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Minneapolis, MN), California Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco, CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA), and Honolulu Academy of Arts (Honolulu, HI). This first-time endeavor by the Korean government exemplified both gratitude to America and as a way to rectify the image of Koreans to American eyes. This exhibition, The Masterpieces of Korean Art, was the first-ever display of Korean fine art in the U.S.
 
It was during these same years that photographer Han Youngsoo was capturing what he saw in Korea with his Leica cameras – IIIf, M3 and M2. That he carried multiple Leica cameras advertised that he had come from a wealthy family, which represented a very small portion of the population at the time. Like anyone, choices were made regarding what to do with that wealth. Han, in following his eye and his love, chose to forever eternalize the people of South Korea.

한영수의 많은 사진들에서 유머는 의도하지 않은 병치에 의한 자연스러운 결과물로 나타난다. 이런 장면들은 커다란 폭소를 이끌어내는 것이 아니라, 이미 잘 알고 있는 것들과 친숙한 것들이 불러내는 조용한 미소를 만들어낸다. 등 뒤의 벽에 낙서가 있음을 미처 눈치 채지 못한 소년(사진 7), 시선과 시선의 얽힘(사진 8), 살짝 어색한 순간(189p). 아직은 어린이의 모습이지만 마음은 이미 여자임을 보여주는 소녀(38p)와 매우 근엄한 얼굴을 한 조각상과 천진난만한 여학생의 대조(93p). 정장을 차려입고 이미 성인이 된 듯 행동하는 어린 소년(105p)과 불안정하게 방치된 영화간판 앞을 지나는 여성(사진 9). 나는 이 사진들을 촬영하는 순간 카메라 뒤에서 한영수가 혼자 조용히 미소 짓고 있는 모습이 눈에 보이는 듯하다.

Humor, a natural outcome of unconscious juxtapositions, comes across in many of Han’s photographs. These moments do not elicit loud belly laughs, but bring a quiet smile of knowing and familiarity: the young boy who is not quite aware of the phallic chalk drawing behind him (figure 7Hi ); who is looking at whom? (figure 8); a photo of an awkward situation (189p); a young girl already displaying characteristics of a typical girl (38p); the contrast between the very stern-faced traditional statue and all the seeming free-spirited girls who were now getting an education (93p); the young boy in the suit is already a man (105p); and a woman accepting that the movie sign is obviously not presented correctly (figure 9). In all these moments and more, I imagine Han smiled quietly to himself often, behind his camera.

의도했던 의도하지 않았던, 한영수는 급격하게 변화하는 사회 현실을 총체적으로 포착했다. 한국은 희생자들의 나라도 아니었고, 또한 영웅들의 나라일 필요도 없었다. 사람들은 하루하루 자신들의 삶을 살아갈 뿐이었다. 거리에는 자동차와 버스가 인력거 옆을 나란히 스쳐 지나고(사진 1), 아이들은 미국 만화책에 빠져들었다(사진 2). 전통적인 평상복인 한복을 입은 여성들과 현대화된 새로운 “신여성”들은 나란히 거리를 거닐었다(사진 3, 4). 그리고 그사이 아이들은 태어나고 또 자라났으며 (121p, 사진 6, 7), 거리에선 젊은 연인들이 사랑을 속삭이고 있었다(46p).
 
한영수가 의도적으로 한국의 현대적인 모습을 사진에 남기기 위해 노력한 것은 아닐 것이다. 오히려 그를 매료시킨 것은 하루하루의 일상에서 표출되는 인간에 대한 사랑이었다. 그는 자신이 내린 주관적인 판단을 사진에 드러내는 데에는 큰 관심이 없었고, “딱 맞는 시간”에 찾아 온 사진가로서 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 상황 그 자체를 사진에 담아냈고, 그 작품들은 세월이 흐른 지금까지도 그 가치를 인정받고 있다.
 
1951년 뉴욕 현대미술관의 전시에 출품된 사진들과 비교해 볼 때, 말할 수 없는 어려움을 겪은 한국인들의 모습을 담고 있다는 점에서는 공통점을 가지고 있었지만, 한영수의 사진에는 한국인을 보편적인 인류로 보는 순수한 시각이 담겨 있다는 점에서 큰 차이를 보여준다. 한영수가 사진을 찍은 곳은 한국이라는 특정한 장소였지만, 그의 사진 속에 담겨있는 순간들은 한국이라는 지리적인 위치를 넘어서는 보편성을 담고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 이 사진들이 그 시대상을 반영해내고 공감을 얻어낼 수 있는 것이다.

Collectively, Han captured the realities of a country in transition, whether it was intended or not. Korea was not a country of victims and it was not necessarily a country of heroes. People of all ages were living their lives, day to day. Cars and buses moved next to rickshaws in the streets (figure 1) and children were exposed to American comics (figure2). Women in daily traditional wear walked next to the “new woman,” the modern invention of the traditional woman (figure 3, 4). This generation was already producing the next generation (121p, figure 6, 7) while young couples were showing their love in public (46p).
 
It does not seem that Han deliberately set out to photograph the modern era in South Korea. Rather, it was the humanity expressed everyday that attracted him. Han was the photographer at the “right time” who was not interested in displaying his own judgment; he let the situation speak to him and his works have withstood the test of time.
 
Han’s photographs, in sharp contrast to those exhibited in the 1951 MoMA exhibition, depict the same group of Korean people who underwent unspeakable hardship, but Han had something else to offer – a pure view of Koreans as ordinary people. Han’s venue may have been Korea, but the moments captured in nearly all of his photographs rise above the geographical location to be universal. Therein lies their timeliness and relatability.

그가 사진작가로 가장 활발하게 활동했던 1950-60년대 한국은 미국과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있었고, 유럽으로부터도 간접적인 영향을 받았다. 수많은 한국의 예술가들은 뉴욕과 파리로 유학을 떠났고, 외국으로부터의 영향을 받아들이는 것을 그들이 원하는 해답을 찾는 새롭고도 흥미로운 방법이라고 생각했다. 여러 가지 측면에서 이것은 일본의 침략 이전인 19세기 말, 대한제국 시기(1897~1905)부터 시작된 사진술의 수입 등 현대화를 향한 미완성의 길의 연속선상에 놓여 있는 일이었다.
 
이러한 관점에서 한영수가 프랑스의 사진작가 앙리 카르티에-브레송(1908~2004)을 이미 알고 있었다는 것이 결코 이상한 일은 아니었다. 까르띠에-브레송은 거리의 모습을 포착하는 “캔디드 사진”이 추구하는 구도와 방법론의 대가였다. 이러한 캔디드 사진의 영향을 통해 한영수는 평면적 형태와 입체감, 그리고 사람들이 살아 움직이는 순간들에 구조를 부여하는 방법을 터득했다. 한영수는 그런 순간이 오기를 그 자리에 서서 기다리는 무한한 인내심을 가져야 했다. 물론 카메라가 사람들의 이야기를 사진에 담아내는 그 순간, 피사체가 된 사람들이 여러 대의 카메라를 주렁주렁 달고 자신 앞에 서 있는 사람을 의식하지 않았다는 것은 정말 믿기 어려운 이야기이다. 어떻게 하면 남자의 관심을 받을 수 있는지 이미 잘 알고 있는 사랑스런 소녀와 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 전혀 알지 못한 채 계단을 올라오고 있는 작은 소년(사진10)과 신문 읽기에 빠져 “여성스럽지 않은” 자세를 취하고 있는 여인(194p). 그리고 우산을 가지고 놀다가 사진에 찍힌다는 것을 전혀 알아채지 못한 흰 옷을 입은 소녀(사진11)와 자신만의 세계에서 완전히 빠져있는 젊은 여인(사진12). 하지만 이런 사진들을 보면 이 장면이 작가에 의해 연출된 것으로 보이지는 않으며, 사진 속 주인공들이 사진에 찍히고 있다는 것을 알고 있었다고 보기도 힘들다. 오히려 그들이 아무도 보지 않는다고 생각할때, 까르띠에-브레송의 ‘결정적 순간’과는 또다른, ‘무의식적 순간’을 드러낸다.
 
그의 작품들을 모아놓은 4권의 사진집인 <서울, 모던타임즈>, <꿈결 같은 시절>, <시간 속의 강>, 그리고 <연분홍 치마가 봄바람에>를 보고 있으면 한영수는 사람들이 여전히 살아남았고, 살아가고 있으며, 앞으로 나아가고 있다는 것을 기록하기 위해 단지 한국이라는 나라를 선택해 사진으로 남겼을 뿐이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 이것이 우리가 이 사진들을 읽어내는 방식이다. 한영수는 이미 알고 있었겠지만, 이 사진들이 가진 장점이 한국 사람들을 촬영했기 때문이라 말할 수는 없을 것이다. 그가 남긴 사진들이 가진 진정한 장점은 사진 속의 사람들이 아무도 보지 않는다고 생각하는 순간, 즉 무의식적 순간에 드러나는 것이다.

The 50s and 60s in which Han was most active as a photographer, South Korea was heavily reliant on the U.S. and indirectly, Europe. Many Korean artists left for New York and Paris and regarded outside foreign influences as a new and exciting way to find answers for themselves. In many ways, this was finally the continuation of the unfinished path towards modernization, including the import of photography, begun in the late 19th century during the Korean Empire (1897-1905) before Japanese interruption.
 
In this sense, it is no secret that Han was familiar with French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004). Cartier-Bresson was the master of “candid photography,” a framework and method to capture street art. These kinds of influences were ways for Han to give structure to form, shape, and human moments. Han had to have infinite patience to stand and wait for such moments to occur. It is hard to believe that passerbys were not conscious of a man standing with multiple camera when the dialogue had to exist between them and the camera: the young sweet girl already knowing how to get a boy’s attention and the young boy coming up on the stairs who is oblivious to what is happening (figure 10); the elderly woman who is lost in reading the newspaper in an “unwomanly” pose (194p); the young girl in white who does not realize that she has struck a pose while playing with her umbrella (figure 11); and a young woman completely lost in her own world (figure 12). In this way, many of the photographs do not appear staged. In fact, it is hard to say that they were aware of being photographed. Instead, they reveal the things people and children do when they think no one is looking – the unconscious moment, in contrast to Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moment.
 
The 4 volumes in this series – Seoul, Modern Times, Once Upon a Time, Time Flows in River, and When the Spring Wind Blows demonstrate that Han chose to record the Korean people still standing, living, and moving on. This is the way that we are seen. One cannot insist that the people of a country is strong, as Han knew. True strength is revealed when people think you are not looking – in an unconscious moment.
