The Self-reflection Gobi (2024) combines a writing desk and a prayer kneeler. Giving enough space for one person, the work prompts an intimate and intentional time for self-reflection. Here, the word “self-reflection” refers to both the act of reflecting as well as the mirroring image of the self. Spiritual animals being a recurring motif in UJU’s work, the frogs symbolize transformations, suggesting a possibility for change as a process inherent within self-reflection. The inclusion of change as part of one’s being encourages one to view their identity as something that is fluid and has potential for growth.

About the artist

UJU creates furniture and art objects that explore the intersection between practicality and play. Their work activates rituals, gatherings and discoveries as a way to create opportunities for reflection, togetherness and shared experiences. Often combining natural materials and processes with metal, the architecturally trained artist duo, James Chung and William Hu, draws inspiration from their cultural heritage and pays homage to contemporary everyday traditions.
