Included in the exhibition are three works by Yoonjeong Lee: Storage for Magnets (2024), Storage for Letters (2024) and Storage for Nothing (2024). The series of works takes objects that are named solely after their function and reimagines them to perform functions that are different from what the objects are conventionally known for. The artist selects “objects” that are to be stored – magnets, letters and nothing. Magnets, which are usually kept in drawers or are serving its purpose on refrigerators, are positioned meticulously on the shelves of the storage. Even when they are not serving their designated purpose, the magnets hold a strong visual presence. It appears as if the storage becomes a miniature of a multistory, industrial museum building with each floor of the museum filled with abstract sculptures. Letters, usually stored away in boxes, are left exposed to be returned to more frequently. Thank you cards, apology letters, congratulatory messages and love letters stack upon each other within the storage. Next to the Storage for Magnets, the scale of the letters feel disproportionately large. Considering the context of the exhibition, the letters, once personal and intimate, become public and serve the purpose of interactivity. In Storage for Nothing, nothing becomes the subject, while spotlighting the storage through its nothingness.

About the artist

Yoonjeong Lee is a Seoul based artist questioning the state of and criteria behind the dominant and the subordinate. By reimagining expected forms of quotidian functional objects – such as nails, hooks, chains, and stationery – Lee’s work disrupts hierarchies and categorizations that permeate in everyday objects and presents new perspectives on conventional value systems.
