In The Sounds Outside the Door II (2024), the artist retraces her memories of growing up in Joogong Apartment. These apartments were tall towers that housed hundreds of families in a single building and were offered at reasonable prices by government agencies to ensure housing stability for the growing city. Accumulating the most generic mailbox prevalent in Korea at the time, Shin restages her experience of seeing the endless grid of mailboxes on the first floor of the apartment building and thinking about how each mailbox was a representation of somebody’s home and ultimately their world. Shin recalls walking down the hallways and hearing sounds emanating from each apartment door – the sound of washing dishes, the noise from the TV, grandparents’ conversations, children crying and laughing. As if to peek through the lives of these individual families, the sounds sparked images of what their worlds could look like. The field recordings in Shin’s work creates a soundscape that can be experienced both singularly and collectively, reminding the viewers of the inextricable relationship between the individual and the society.
